A MINERS EQUIPMENT
1. A PICK: A pick was used for wearing down rock on the mountains to make mining tunnels.
2. A SHOVEL: A shovel was used for digging on shore of a river and also wearing down rock. They were also for scooping up sand and putting it in the PAN.
3. A PAN: A was used for near a river bed. You would scoop up some sand, shake the pan and the sand would go out under the pan to reveal gold flakes or nuggets.
4. A BUCKET: A bucket was used for caring gold (yeah, if you actually found some!)
5. A WATER CANTEEN: A water canteen was used for (we all know it was to carry water so a THIRSTY miner could drink. I was required to do this).

HOW WOULD MINERS GET EQUIPMENT
A miner would get equipment from merchants. Merchants were the people who sold equipment to miners. To learn more, go to the page labeled " MERCHANTS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE OF THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH".
ways to make sure gold is real (if you actually found gold)
1. Take a hammer and try to smash it. If it smashes to pieces, it's not gold. If it doesn't, IT'S GOLD!!!!
2. Put it in boiling water and scrub it with LYE SOAP. If it erodes, it's not gold, if it doesn't, IT'S GOLD!
3. Soak it in vinegar. If it dissolves, it's not gold. If it doesn't, IT'S GOLD!
4. Drip nitric acid on it. If it dissolves, it's not gold. If it doesn't, IT'S GOLD!
5. Weigh it and compare it to a rock the same size. If it isn't around x8 the weight of the rock, it's not gold. If it is around x8 the weight of the rock, IT'S GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
